September (Score & Parts)

A beautiful exploration of seasonal depression that teaches its players how to be sensitive to the music, whether it be playing delicate moments together, or soaring into climax.

Program Note:

The month of September always brings a beautiful fall energy that radiates almost everywhere I see… except for where I live. Here in central Texas, September seems to love a dull, gray heat mixed with humidity that just won’t go away, bringing with it the want to stay in rather than go out, as well as the realization that every to-do list is left unaddressed. Living through that kind of environment every year not only brings a toll on my productivity, but also my mental state, where sometimes it’s hard to see good both in the world and within people. I wrote this piece to give light into what I wish September felt like for me– surrounded by cozy amber and brown-leaved trees, a crisp breeze with foggy mist in the air, and an aura of positivity within my mind. It’s an escape from my temporary reality of gray that allows my imagination to flow and my creativity to thrive, and I hope that someday I can spend every September there.
